Changing the Countryside
Sailing out of Dover on a midnight, darkened sea,
A cargo of the waste of the dairy industry,
The white cliffs turn to crimson red as the bluebirds are shot on sight,
It’s time for changing the countryside
From veal crate to farrow crate, a sow lies in despair,
Her babies can suckle but she can’t turn to show she cares,
Strong men will cry and the pigs will fly when a farmer decides,
It’s time for changing the countryside
A fox is snared so pheasants battery reared can be blown out of the skies
As the accountants count the vast amounts the killing fields will yield,
there's no change for changing the countryside
Run, rabbit, run, here comes farmer with his gun
But don’t stop to rest ‘cause you’re a pest and his fun has just begun
But you’re so good to eat you’re ‘supermeat’ so don’t be taken by surprise,
It’s time for changing the countryside
An otter is snared so pheasants battery reared can be blown out of the skies,
Our noble queen is sometimes seen throttling one for the pot,
These days she’s such a rotten shot
And to the Countryside Alliance I’ve a message for you all,
You might own the land but understand, you do not own the soil
And if you think you’re on the brink of turning back the tide,
Think twice, we’re changing the countryside
We’re changing the countryside
We’re changing the countryside
We’re changing the countryside
We’re changing the countryside
Going Home
Going home, going home,
Going home to my soul,
To the warm embrace of childhood,
You’re the push and you’re the pull,
Going home, going home,
Never to leave you again
Sometimes I wish you were with me,
Like the warm September sun,
Then you would keep me from falling,
When October storms begin
Sometimes I wish you could see me,
Never sleep and never rest,
Then you could show me tomorrow
And leave the past but not forget
Going home, going home,
Going home to my soul,
To the warm embrace of childhood,
You’re the push and you’re the pull,
Going home, going home,
Never to leave you again
Sometimes I wish you could hear me,
Then I need never call again,
Then you could lead me to pasture,
When evening’s sun has stilled the rain
Going home, going home,
Going home to my soul,
To the warm embrace of childhood,
You’re the push and you’re the pull,
Going home, going home,
Never to leave you again
From the Outside
Looking in from the outside, afraid that I might fall,
Into the centre, the middle of it all,
I’m pushed and pulled and yet I still refuse to leap,
Teetering on the outside where the part time cowards sleep
What’s it like on the inside? I’ve been invited so many times,
Always out from inside, afraid of what I’d find,
I could have jumped but it seemed easier to run,
I thought it was a black hole or some dark side of the sun
But time runs short and the opening is closing,
It’s now or never, do or die before my world stops revolving,
Take me in from the outside, to the warmth on the inside,
But still I fear I could be burnt by the heat
Think I hear voices calling, people calling from within,
They’re reaching for my hand, are they trying to pull me in?
But with their hands in mine they climb the walls,
They tell me that the inside is for lunatics and fools
But time runs short and the opening is closing,
It’s now or never, do or die, before my world stops revolving,
Should I escape from the outside? Is the sun on the inside?
And would I be blinded by its light?
Have You Heard the Milk Herd?
Have you heard the milk herd? Hear them groan, hear them bellow,
Cowed, cow eyes search pasture, but pasteurised is what you’re after,
They call, they plead, they search for new born calf,
But she’s all alone, encased in the dark,
Or he’s lying still, a bullet in his head
Do you drink the white stuff? Breast is best but you love an udder,
The milk of human kindness, is rarely shown to they who suffer,
Would you suckle from a pregnant cow?
Would you lose your bottle? Would your fresh cream sell?
If you had to spread your toast, with our infected smell
I once met a farmer, who had a name for every mother,
They came to him like children, for he would never make them suffer,
He talked of diversifying into beef, for farming’s tough he needed some relief,
As he fondled the necks of his herd, that the blade would slash
I am of the milk herd; I’ve had eight calves but not their father,
I’m too lame to stand now, my muscles all turned into butter,
I could have lived to be twice this age,
I have no strength to even summon rage,
But you’ll meet all of us again,
But you’ll meat all of us again,
But you’ll eat all of me again,
Yes, you’ll eat all of me again,
In your cheeseburger!
In Days of the Slanted Sun
Everything was certain, everything was true,
The future meant forever and every day was new
But a future came and went, with a youth that I misspent,
But I held you for a moment, in those days of endless fun,
Yet time froze forever, in the haze of a slanted sun
Everyone’s so certain, in the truth of their point of view,
They talk of a future as if every day was new
But a future came and went, with a youth that I misspent,
But I held you for a moment, in those days of endless fun,
Yet time froze forever, in the haze of a slanted sun
Now all seems so uncertain and the truth is as I choose,
But the future seems so final, with every passing day I lose
But as futures come and go, I cannot tell, I do not know,
If I will hold you for a moment, in a lifetime still to come,
Where moments mean forever, as in days of the slanted sun
Will I hold you for a moment, in a lifetime still to come?
Where moments last forever, as in days of the slanted sun
In Medcine's Name
I’m stuck in this lab, laid out on a slab and I don’t even know what for,
They’re dripping pain in my eyes; they say no one will die as long as their profits soar
And I’m so sore; tell me why I’m so sore and why their profits soar? And why I’m so sore, tell me why I’m so sore as long as their profits soar?
I’ve got plugs in my brains, you know I’m going insane and we’ve almost the same DNA, if you want to look in my head then try yours instead ‘cause we’re only a gene away, a dream away, wish I could dream away, only a dream away, wish I could dream away, only a dream away, wish I could dream away
If we’re so much the same then you can share my pain
And if we’re not then what’s the use of all the shame done in medicine’s name that’s nothing short of Nazi abuse, ah, what’s the use of all your Nazi abuse? Come on tell me now what’s the use of all your Nazi abuse?
Tell me what’s the use of all your Nazi abuse?
Now Professor Blakemore if you’d been in a world war in 1942,
You could have teamed up with Eichmann and been quite a dream team
But a nightmare for every Jew,
Ah, wouldn’t you have been a nightmare for every Jew?
Come on tell me now wouldn’t you have been a nightmare for every Jew?
Tell me wouldn’t you have been a nightmare for every Jew?
If we’re so much the same then you can share my pain
And if we’re not then what’s the use of all the shame done in medicine’s name that’s nothing short of Nazi abuse, ah, what’s the use of all your Nazi abuse? Come on tell me now what’s the use of all your Nazi abuse?
Tell me what’s the use of all your Nazi abuse?
Now you’ve filled me with cancer and I’m the panacea for all your society’s ills,
I’m your commercial future so you compassionately torture
And feed me with all these pills,
and I’m so ill, all these pills just make you ill, tell me why I’m so ill and why these pills just make you ill, tell me why I’m so ill and why these pills just make you ill?
If we’re so much the same then you can share my pain
And if we’re not then what’s the use of all the shame done in medicine’s name that’s nothing short of Nazi abuse, ah, what’s the use of all your Nazi abuse? Come on tell me now what’s the use of all your Nazi abuse?
Tell me what’s the use of all your Nazi abuse?
In medicine’s name, all this pain,
In medicine’s name, all this shame
Life in a Box
I close the windows, pull the curtain, lock the door from within
I close my eyes until the night comes, shutting out what’s within
The wind used to blow and would tell me where to go
Though altering course on a whim
Daydreams, nightdreams, sweet dreams, no dreams, come and go as they please
Accusing, cursing, tempting, taunting, promising only to tease
I want to know why the wind does not blow
Letting me drift with the tide
Lamp turned low, soft music playing, living life as a play
Feeling good about tomorrow, tomorrow always one day away
My window on the world, through the news on TV
The mess all contained in a box
At the flick of a switch it contains only me
As a life ticks away on a clock
The switch has been thrown and I am alone
Living a life in a box
Momentary Hermit
At this moment I'd like to be a hermit in his cave
without obligations, enclosed in my space
deafened by silence, disappeared without trace
And at this moment I'd like to be a gull on a winter's wave
changing direction whenever I chose
with the wind to support me and nothing to lose
At this moment I'd like to be....
At this moment I'd like to be a stranger in a town
lost in the crowd, I'd be so alone
completely anonymous totally unknown
And at this moment I'd like to be travelling through space and time
choosing the moments when I would appear
picking the place and selecting the year
At this moment I'd like to be....
At this moment I'd like to be in a game of hide and seek
I'd do the hiding I'd be so hard to find
but I'd like the option to be seeking next time
And if you found me please promise me this
that you would tell no one unless I exist
and if I did then you can tell all the world
that this momentary hermit has come in from the cold
At this moment I'd like to be....
One More Time
Although I'm down tonight, I know I'll be fine tomorrow
'cause that's me and you know that's how I am
but I'll bounce back one more time
yes I'll bounce back one more time
AlthoughI've lost a fight I know I'll be fine tomorrow
I'll be me and you know that's who I am
yes I'll win the war once again
you know I'll win the war once more time
One more try one more time
but a time will come when the sands run dry
and will I be home and dry when the tide rolls in?
Sometimes I lose my will but I know I'll regain it tomorrow
I will and you know that's what I'll do
I will find my will with the dawn
I will find my will one more time
One more try one more time
but a time will come when the sands run dry
and will I be home and dry when the tide rolls in?
Although I'm down tonight, I know I'll be fine tomorrow
'cause that's me and you know that's how I am
but I'll bounce back one more time
yes I'll bounce back one more time
Ring of Wire
In this ring of wire, I lay here bleeding,
From this ring of wire, the world is receding,
My senses wane with the coming light
This fox has spent his final night
And lays dying, in this ring of wire
In this ring of wire, I’m ensnared once again,
I’ve been here before, always trapped in this pain,
In my struggle to be free,
The noose tightened and ripped into me,
Now a badger dies, in this ring of wire
A last request before we go,
Ban the snare and let us know,
That even as we die,
You’ll break this ring of wire
In this ring of wire nine lives flash before me,
My fur so gently washed, lies torn from my body,
Tooth and claw now no use to me
In life so loved, death comes brutally
The purring dies, in this ring of wire
A last request before we go,
Ban the snare and let us know,
That even as we die,
You’ll break this ring of wire
A last request before we go,
Ban the snare and let us know,
That even as we die,
You’ll break this ring of wire
Sea Saforda
Sea Saforda, old haven of the east,
From your shores I’ve had to come and go,
Sea Saforda, in your valleys I find peace
But with your tides I’ve had to ebb and flow
But I just want to see the sun roll down on Castle Hill,
I just want to see you shine
Sea Saforda, for a lifetime I have known,
Your sense of place, my place I know as home,
Sea Saforda, though your harbour is no more,
The wind still blows, the waves crash on your shore
But I just want to see the sun roll down on Castle Hill,
I just want to see you shine
Sea Saforda, from the Beacon to the Bay,
Memories deep of summers yesterday,
So high and over are the ways that lead to you,
Distant dreams now coming into view
But I just want to see the sun roll down on Castle Hill,
I just want to see you shine
But I just want to see the sun roll down on Castle Hill,
I just want to see you shine
But I just want to see the sun roll down on Castle Hill,
I just want to see you shine
The Cliff Overlooking the Sea
It was sunny and cold, you were twenty years old,
The day I showed you the sea,
You said “it’s like Ireland,” you shared my delight in it,
You saw it meant home for me,
Three hours on a bus, plates of bangers and mash,
Had strengthened the bond that would be,
And as Venus came up, the sun then went down,
On the cliff overlooking the sea
Sharing secrets and laughter, we ran for the cover,
Of the town that twinkled in light,
You sang me some rhyme, aimed to keep us in time,
And in tune with the birds of the night,
Ah, but we missed the bus, so the train took the strain,
Of the union of body and soul,
And as the harbour came near, so my eyes turned back,
To the cliff overlooking the sea
We returned in the summer, the air was much warmer,
We lay on our bed in the sun,
Having climbed Seven Sisters, our feet tired and blistered,
We climbed seven more as one,
But if I had know then, what our fate was to be,
I doubt if I’d ever have shown you,
The ship going out and the tide coming in,
By the cliff overlooking the sea
It was sunny and warm; you were cold and forlorn,
The day we lived by the sea,
You said “I am leaving you, I can’t believe in you,”
The night of the port in the storm,
I was young and naïve but I still believe,
I was right when I took you to see,
And now Venus goes down but the sun will come up,
On the cliff overlooking the sea
So, many years later, I still remember,
The events of that first winter’s day,
When you told me of Ireland, your dogs and the mountains,
But then you became so alone,
So I’m glad you’ve gone back, to where you belong,
But I’m glad we were able to be,
Lovers and friends, where it all had to end
By the cliff, overlooking the sea
The Hazel Tree
What became of the hazel tree, hiding in the wood?
Did the axe man come and chop her down, just like she feared he would?
She felt so small, though she’d grown so tall and much misunderstood
But this hazel tree, was content to be, known only unto God
She grew amongst the berries of the wayfaring tree,
But she’d bear no fruit to call her own, she was wild but never free,
And so imprisoned by the elders, who would not let her bear the flowers,
That would grace this hazel tree, tell me…
What became of the hazel tree, hiding in the wood?
Did the axe man come and chop her down, just like she feared he would?
She felt so small, though she’d grown so tall and much misunderstood
But this hazel tree, was content to be, known only unto God
She longed to be growing on some wild and lonely moor,
Where though so green, she would not be seen through her gorse, protected door,
So shedding leaves before their time, she fooled the wood that she had died,
But only the willow wept, tell me…
What became of the hazel tree, hiding in the wood?
Did the axe man come and chop her down, just like she feared he would?
She felt so small, though she’d grown so tall and much misunderstood
But this hazel tree, was content to be, known only unto God
The axe man never found her, though he searched both wood and moor,
Her deception was her armour, the more he looked the less he saw,
And when at last he realised, how he’d been deceived before his eyes,
He would not raise his axe, tell me…
What became of the hazel tree, hiding in the wood?
Did the axe man come and chop her down, just like she feared he would?
She felt so small, though she’d grown so tall and much misunderstood
But this hazel tree, was content to be, known only unto God
What became of the hazel tree, hiding in the wood?
Did the axe man come and chop her down, just like she feared he would?
What became of the hazel tree, hiding in the wood?
Through the Eyes of a Wolf (Copyright Wolf's Angel 2007)
Forgive me, for I know not what I do.
Hated, feared, hunted, murdered.
Why do the forests run red with our blood?
The machine in the sky, stirs the air, shakes the trees,
rains down bolts of silver upon us.
We run.....run for our lives.
Those who fear us and seek to destroy us
are of dark hearts and closed minds.
There are good humans, who see through
stories of old that tell tales of untruths.
Those that defend us know we are not so different,
for they are of compassionate nature.
A wise wolf once said :
Be safe, move swiftly,
he who hides in shadows.
Guardian, hunter, teacher, mother.
Beautiful spirit of the night who's song
reaches as far as the moon.
Your kind will not be banished to a trail
of paw prints left in the earth.
Be strong, defender of all that is good
for your cries no longer fall on deaf ears.
Although you will always be misunderstood.
Nature always finds a way and the earth
will provide a future for wolf kind.
To Sophia
Are you sure you really want to play the game?
Are you sure you know the rules?
And you’re probably right to feel no shame,
And to take all men for fools,
And yet I know you really care for them,
And their hard luck tales of woe,
Since you changed your name to Sophia
It’s no business of mine how you spend your time,
But I’d like you to consider,
That every bottle of wine is a very fine line,
Between happiness and pleasure,
But you feel so strong and could never be wrong,
And laugh in the face of danger,
Now you’ve changed your name to Sophia
Now the double life you lead, seems to fill some inner need,
Of having the last laugh,
But I know you cry and bleed but the world will never see,
The little girl behind the mask, the mask you gave, the mask you gave,
The mask you gave to Sophia
Strange men in bars and strangers cars,
You predate them without mercy,
But could it be true that it’s not really you,
To make a killing quite so lightly?
Because I felt you charm, when I took your arm,
And your warmth that grows so lightly,
What made you change your name to Sophia?
Now the double life you lead, seems to fill some inner need,
Of having the last laugh,
But I know you cry and bleed but the world will never see,
The little girl behind the mask, the mask you gave, the mask you gave,
The mask you gave to Sophia
You don’t really have to want to play the game,
It was you, who set the rules,
And you’re perfectly right to feel no shame,
Because it’s true, all men are fools,
But I think you made an exception for me,
And my hard luck tales of woe,
You never threw my pride to Sophia
And I think you made an exception for me,
And my hard luck tales of woe,
You never threw my soul to Sophia
And would you make an exception for me,
By telling me it’s true,
You’ll never sell your soul to Sophia
Toro de la Vega
The natives are getting restless for the Toro de la Vega
Craving blood and fear from the Toro de la Vega
Tell me dear virgin do you really need our bodies?
Tell me dear maiden do really need our bulls?
What have we done to you?
The tourists are here, flown in by British Airways
Wrapped up in the flag but so keen to learn of their ways
BA friend to a virgin, could you stitch up a fare or two
And Ryan Air, you know, there’s always a niche here for you
You’d be right at the front of the queue
Blessed by the Church, oh, where’s a pope when you need one?
(Where’s that pontiff now?)
Left in the lurch by a god who only cares for man,
(Why only for man?)
Why aren’t we in his plan?
We are the ghosts of the Toro de la Vega
United as one, the Toro de la Vega
Crossing the bridge to where the macho men stand tall
I freeze and the blood flows as the final blade is sunk
By a teenage boy and a drunk
Blessed by the Church, oh, where’s a pope when you need one?
(Where’s that pontiff now?)
Left in the lurch by a god who only cares for man,
(Why only for man?)
Why aren’t we in his plan?
There are too many ghosts at the Toro de la Vega
United with those from California to Espana
Tell me dear virgin do you revel in my torture?
Tell me dear maiden were you like that as a girl?
What have they done to you?
We Could All Have Got It All Wrong
Don’t need your Eastern wisdom; don’t need your Western greed,
Don’t need to know your karma, your colour or your creed,
Just show me you’re a person, show me that you feel,
Tell me you really love, those that you kill
Don’t need your crazy martyrs; don’t need your stocks and shares,
Don’t need your flags and anthems, your mantras and your prayers,
Let me see through you, let me see you’re sane,
Let me know you’re hurting, feel sorrow and feel pain
I don’t need you to agree with me on every point I make,
But I’d like you to believe with me that beliefs can be mistakes,
I could be wrong, but we could all have got it all wrong
I don’t need you to agree with me on every point I make,
But I’d like you to believe with me that beliefs can be mistakes,
I could be wrong, but we could all have got it all wrong
Don’t need your social theories; don’t need your relative truths,
Don’t need your market forces and your economic proofs,
Don’t need your empty rhetoric; don’t need your political spin,
Just want to see a smile behind your phoney grin
I don’t need you to agree with me on every point I make,
But I’d like you to believe with me that beliefs can be mistakes,
I could be wrong, but we could all have got it all wrong
I could be wrong, but we could all have got it all wrong
I could be wrong, but we could all have got it all wrong
I could be wrong, but we could all have got it all wrong
Weeping at the Cost
Sometime in the future the earth is scorched and bare,
the humans have all gone, taking with them all that lived and breathed,
all of creation
Deep in a mountain, far below the ash,
a cell divides in two, once more the yearning of life to be
is undiminished
What of the outcome? Where will life go from here?
Should any rule the earth? Does pain and torture have to pose
as civilisation?
Gaia sheds her tears, for all her children lost
as her womb stirs once more, she vows this time she will not be left
weeping at the cost
